The 2016 Cycling Victoria Criterium Championships were raced today, at the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit, having been moved from their original location in Geelong, with the idea of enticing more riders to a more central location in the heart of Melbourne. The St Kilda Cycling Club (SKCC) and the Geelong Cycling Club ran the event together, with the assistance of Cycling Victoria, who provided their commissaires, timekeepers, and other judges for the morning’s racing. From all appearances, the move was an outstanding success, with over 440 riders participating, and probably as many people again who turned up to spectate.

We (at SKCC, GCC and Cycling Victoria) were privileged to have been granted permission by Parks Victoria and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to run this event on the Albert Park Grand Prix road circuit, with full road closures, that gave riders an experience unrivaled in any city based racing in Melbourne. Even driving on the circuit to gain vantage points to shoot was itself a blast: no traffic, no traffic barriers, and a wonderful, smooth surface!

The Elite men’s race was taken out by Jesse Kerrison, of the State of Matter / MAAP team, and the Elite women’s race was taken out by Bridie O’Donnell, riding for the Rush Women / Dux Dream Foundation team. Some of these photos will also be up on the Cycling Victoria website and their Facebook page – I’ll update this post and provide links when they have loaded them up.
